Loss Lessons
|
IN THE INTEREST OF TIME
|
| |
PestSure Members,
- Technician injured his back when he jumped from
a ladder ...
- Employee injured foot and required surgery when
he jumped from a loading dock...
- Insured strained hip when he jumped from the front
step of a customers home ...
- Technician injured knee when he jumped from the
top of a retaining wall and slipped on the wet grass below
..
- Technician injured shoulder when he jumped off
the edge of a customers deck and fell on his side ...
There are several recent
claims that have resulted from a technician jumping
from one surface to another while performing work tasks.
I assume these individuals chose to jump rather than
take the usual means of egress in the interest of saving
time or effort. Each of these injuries resulted in surgery
and recovery time for these individuals. Each resulted
in the temporary loss of a productive team member for
the company. Each of these injuries were completely
avoidable.
Lesson:
The choices we make in the interest of saving time often increase
our exposure to hazards and injury.
- Plan your path of travel and note any hazards
by doing a preview of the work site prior to beginning
your service
- Use the designated stairs, paths, and walkways
to move from one working height to another
- Use the designed mode of egress from a structure
- Ask yourself "what if" questions when
contemplating an unusual task or maneuver
- Second guess your decision when your motivation
is purely in the interest of saving time
Work injury and surgery recovery are never without cost to
the employee, their family, and their employer. Please share
this information with your front-line technicians. Reiterate
your desire that they conduct their work in the safest possible
manner at all times. Discuss job efficiencies and your company
procedures on notification to the customer, should a technician
be running late.
