DRILLING
|
| |
PestSure Members,
A PestSure technician was injured when the drill he was using
caught in some re-bar. His injuries included his left wrist
and elbow, and his right shoulder. The wrist and shoulder
required surgery to repair the damage. After surgery and conservative
treatment to the shoulder, a second surgery was conducted.
Both attempts at surgery have been unsuccessful and they are
currently recommending a third.
Lesson:
Apply these techniques when using a drill and other power
tools:
- Obtain thorough training in the use of any new
power tool and the application in which you will be using
it, prior to beginning any new task.
- Stay alert and mindful of the task when operating
any power tool. Assess the possible hazards present prior
to beginning your work.
- Use stable footing at all times while operating
a drill. Proper footing and balance provide you with better
control of the tool when an unexpected situation occurs.
- Always use all personal protective equipment such
as eye, ear, hand, and foot protection.
- Be certain the power tool that you are using has
been maintained by a qualified person and that it is in
good operating condition with all guarding and components
in place.
This very common task resulted in an injury that has limited
this technician for almost 3 years. His limitations obviously
carry over into his personal life and result in lifestyle
changes for his entire family.
Please pass this information along to those in your organization
who will communicate this lesson to the front line technicians.
Discuss power tool use as a group and review drilling practices
including specific technique and hazard assessment of the
work site.
