FALL FROM ROOF
|
| |
PestSure Members,
Multiple injuries resulted to a technician when he went off
the edge of a customer's roof and fell eighteen feet to the
ground. The technician is currently able to walk with the
aid of a walker and continues therapy. His head injuries caused
loss of hearing, eyesight and there are cognitive issues as
well.
A fall protection plan is vital when you access areas above
ground level, to complete your work tasks. At the very least,
a "Controlled Access Zone" should always be identified
and maintained when working on a roof. Every person on the
job site must be aware of, and monitor this zone at all times.
Fall protection training including ladder use and personal
fall arrest system use should be provided to any technician
who will be exposed to working at heights.
Lesson:
- Limit the number of employees who you will have
working at heights and be certain they have the required
fall protection training for your exposures
- Review job specific fall protection when a job
is bid so you can figure in adequate cost for any additional
set-up time and or equipment
- Review your written fall protection program and
make certain anyone who works at heights is knowledgeable
of the program
- Call me if you need assistance with resources
Take a moment to consider the hazards when a new job is bid.
Review, with your team, the work you are currently doing that
involves roof work or work at heights with an unprotected
edge. This technician took one wrong step that drastically
affected his life and that of his family. Address any fall
hazards that exist before you conduct the work.
