INTERSECTIONS

PestSure Members,

In a recent PestSure auto claim, an intersection accident resulted in our driver being rear-ended at the intersection and being pushed into oncoming traffic. The injuries and vehicle damage were more severe than expected because our vehicle was hit on the passenger side in addition to being rear-ended.

The PestSure driver was first in the line of traffic waiting for the light to turn green so that he could complete a left turn. The driver of the other vehicle was approaching the light behind our driver, just as it turned green. The other driver accelerated to move through the intersection, not realizing that our driver was waiting for oncoming traffic to pass in order to complete his left turn. The other driver did not notice our turn signal.

When our driver was rear-ended, he was stopped in traffic and had his wheels turned to the left while waiting to make his turn. This one mistake resulted in not only a rear impact but also a significant side impact collision.

Lesson:
  • When turning left, always wait for traffic to clear with your wheels and the vehicle pointing straight ahead.
  • When stopping at an intersection to wait for the light, always try to stop back at least one car length from the cross traffic.
  • Before proceeding through an intersection, always look at cross traffic to be sure all lanes have stopped and that no vehicle is disobeying traffic controls.
  • Maintain awareness of traffic around you and continue driving your vehicle even when stopped.

In this case, the accident was determined to be the other driver's fault or negligence. The fault determination will do nothing to assist our driver with recovery from his injuries or cover his route while he heals. A third vehicle was involved in this collision needlessly as a result of our driver's actions. Please discuss intersection safety and review the rules for intersections taught in Eos. Please share and discuss this Loss Lesson with your entire team so they can apply the knowledge in the field and we can all learn from this event.
